Edinburgh: Step Into a Fairy Tale
Scotland’s two largest cities are Edinburgh and Glasgow. Separated by an hour and a half drive, visitors to Scotland can enjoy both of these diverse cities. Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, retains its romantic and ethereal façade. A beautiful but daunting castle overlooks the city and visitors may feel as though they have stepped into the story of Cinderella. This lovely city is second to only London as a popular tourist destination in Great Brittan.
Visitors to Scotland’s capital will want to make a special effort to tour Edinburgh Castle. No one is sure when the castle was built but there is documentation suggesting that it was definitely occupied during the 11th century by a Saxon queen who later became Saint Margaret. Saint Margret’s Chapel is the oldest intact part of the castle today. For the past two hundred years Edinburg Castle housed a military battalion and soldiers still live their today. Many of the displays in and around the castle itself are military related. During the 18th and 19th centuries the castle served as a jail of sorts; many of Napoleon’s soldiers were kept here during the Napoleonic Wars.
Aside from the military history of the castle, visitors will also learn about its royal history. Mary, Queen of Scots birthed her son, James II in the rooms of the castle. Parliament has used to the castle for meeting and ceremonies and the crown jewels of Scotland have been displayed here.
Visitors to this lovely Scottish city will find many museums, festival, and other attractions which will delight and amuse. A holiday in Edinburg will be a fabulous vacation and one to remember.
